How We Choose the Products We Recommend
We don’t have a warehouse full of gear to physically put through its paces — what we do instead is disciplined research. For every guide, we start with the manufacturer’s published specifications and compare them directly against competing models in the same price range. We track real, current pricing across retailers, not list prices that never actually apply, so the numbers in our comparisons reflect what you’d actually pay today. And we read, in bulk, through verified customer reviews and independent expert coverage for each product, looking for recurring complaints, common praise, and the patterns a single glossy product page won’t tell you.
Where we’ve personally bought and used a product ourselves — currently true for many of the kitchen items we cover — we say so directly in the review, and that firsthand experience shapes what we highlight. For everything else, our pros-and-cons calls come from that cross-referenced research process, not a single source or a rewritten spec sheet. We revisit guides periodically as prices shift and new models launch, and we link to multiple retailers where possible so you’re not stuck with just one option.

Heated blankets are one of the cheapest ways to stay warm: a typical heated throw uses around 100 watts, compared with 1,500 watts for a space heater. Before you buy, check these eight things.
1. Throw, Bed Blanket or Wearable?
A throw (about 50″ x 60″) warms one person on a sofa or chair. A bed blanket (twin to king) covers a whole mattress. A wearable blanket adds sleeves, a hood or a foot pocket so you can move your hands while staying covered.
2. Heat Settings and Temperature Range
More heat levels give you finer control. Budget throws often have 3–4 settings; better ones have 6 or more. Check the temperature range too: some top out around 105°F, others go higher.
3. Auto Shut-Off and Timers
A fixed 4-hour shut-off is fine for the couch. If you want to fall asleep under it, look for adjustable timers up to 8–12 hours.
4. Safety Certification
Look for ETL or UL certification and overheat protection. Keep the controller uncovered while in use, don’t fold or bunch the blanket while it’s on, and don’t use heated blankets for infants or anyone who can’t operate the controls.
5. Fabric and Feel
Fleece is light and inexpensive. Flannel-and-sherpa or plush-and-sherpa blankets are thicker and stay warm even when unplugged.
6. Dual Controls for Couples
On queen and king blankets, dual controls let each person set their own side. It’s worth paying for if you and your partner disagree about temperature.
7. Washing and Care
Most modern heated blankets are machine washable once the controller is unplugged. Always follow the care label: gentle cycle, no dry cleaning, no bleach.
8. Running Cost
At about 100W, a heated throw running for 8 hours uses around 0.8 kWh. Multiply by your electricity rate to estimate the cost. Heating yourself is usually much cheaper than heating the whole room.
