The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth with Straw is our favorite everyday water bottle, scoring high marks in our test metrics. In our review, we wrote: \u201cIt is easy to carry, the insulation is superb, and it seamlessly integrated into my daily routine from commute to the gym.<\/em>\u201d It’s impressively well-insulated, and the water stayed cool even when the bottle’s exterior was warm. It has one of the best feature sets of any bottle in our review. Our reviewer said, \u201cI loved the open mouth and simple construction, which made it a breeze to fill and clean.<\/em>\u201d We also love the flip-up straw cap. And with a comfortable handle, you barely need to lift a finger to tote it around.<\/p>\n

Our main issue with the Hydro Flask<\/strong> is the fairly low volume capacity. If you drink a lot of water, this 24 oz model may be limited, which can become problematic on longer hikes or days out on the lake. You might want to consider stepping up to the larger 32 oz version, although it doesn’t fit as easily in a car cup holder. However, they also make a 32 oz Travel bottle with a narrower bottom that will fit most car cup holders. <\/p>\n
Another drawback is that the straw is plastic. When we filled the bottle with hot water, we could taste a slight hint of plastic, so it lost a couple of points in our taste test. Our testers noted, “If taste (or just avoiding plastics) is your top priority, I would go with a glass bottle like the Purifyou Premium Glass.” We observed no plastic taste with cold beverages or water. We loved toting it around town and even on day outings, but you’ll probably select something more voluminous and lighter for backcountry travel. If insulation and taste are a higher priority for you, the Klean Kanteen TKWide Recycled Insulated scored higher in those two metrics and just a point behind the Hydro Flask overall. It has the option of a metal straw, which helps in the taste department. If you are looking for the best value, consider the Iron Flask Insulated, which scores only a few points behind the Hydro Flask, is lighter, and half the cost.<\/p>\n

If you’re looking for a bottle that stands out aesthetically, look no further than the Iron Flask Insulated bottle. The attractive designs and glossy finish make for a flashy walk down the runway (or trail). \u201cAt first glance, I didn’t think this was a budget option,<\/em>\u201d said our reviewer. The durable plastic cap has an ergonomic carry handle with a carabiner-like clip, making it easy to lug. The flip-up straw design on the lid makes for quick and easy sips, promoting our hydration. We were happy to carry this bottle around, especially considering how cool it looked. It’s also nearly half the price of similar insulated bottles.<\/p>\n

One downside of the Iron Flask<\/strong> is the plastic straw. We noticed we could slightly taste the plastic when our water got warm. Our reviewer said, \u201cI love a perfect sip of water, and this bottle stood out for its great flavor.<\/em>\u201d The straw attaches to the cap via a silicone receptacle, which could also be a potential weak point for wear. Unless you want the color to fade, you must hand wash this bottle due to the finish. This bottle was one of the lightest weight insulated models we tested, but the thinner materials also resulted in the lowest insulation in that category. Our reviewer noted, \u201cIt kept my water plenty cold, but people in hot climates would benefit from a little extra insulation.<\/em>\u201d If insulation is a higher priority for you, the Owala FreeSip Insulated performed better in this metric and only cost a few dollars more. The Iron Flask is terrific and performs well in the daily grind or at the gym, but we reached for one of the burlier and less flashy bottles for outdoor activities where durability was key. <\/p>\n

If you prefer the pure water taste that glass bottles uniquely provide, you’ll want to check out the Purifyou Premium bottle. Our reviewer noted: \u201cThe thick glass has a rounded lip that’s satisfying and almost sensual to sip, making drinking from it a pleasure.<\/em>\u201d The glass cleans well and doesn’t hold onto flavors. There’s no chemical leaching, and the water tastes just as clean from this vessel when it’s warm as when it’s fresh. \u201cI love a perfect sip of water, and this comes darn close to the perfect taste,<\/em>\u201d noted our reviewer. \u201cI didn’t even know I cared so much about the taste of the water until I used this bottle.<\/em>\u201d The protective rubber sleeve makes it slightly more whoopsie-proof, and it comes in various colors (including glow-in-the-dark), although it is still glass, so don’t push your luck. The cap threads are well made, and it spins open with a satisfyingly smooth whirl and clamps down tight due to a rubber gasket under the lid. It also sports an ergonomic finger loop that makes it easy to carry. <\/p>\n

The biggest disadvantage is the small mouth, which makes cleaning more challenging. Therefore, we recommend investing in a good bottle brush (Purifyou sells them on their website). Remember that this model is not insulated, so you’ll want to keep it out of the sun if you want your water to stay cool. The water inside this vessel reached up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (at 81\u00b0F ambient temperature) in our 6-hour sunbaked bottle insulation test. Also, did we mention that it’s glass? That means you’ll have to be more careful handling it than other, more durable plastic and metal models. Our lead reviewer has a two and five-year-old and noted, \u201cWhile my kids have not broken the bottle yet, I am always a little nervous when they use it.<\/em>\u201d The Purifyou is ideal for folks seeking an alternative to plastic and serves as a great indoor water bottle for the office. This water bottle dramatically outscored the Lifefactory Glass Active Cap, the other main glass contender we reviewed.<\/p>\n
For the second year running, this bottle takes the best filter prize. The Brita Stainless Steel Filter Bottle is sleek, leakproof, and well-insulated. There are multiple color options, and the lid’s design makes it easy to clean. The silicone bite straw has a nice shape and texture. This bottle’s flip cap is the most effective and functional of the tested bottles with this feature. It’s lightweight and light on the wallet compared to others in the category. Before testing, we didn’t even realize how useful a filter bottle could be to everyday life.<\/p>\n

The two main issues with the Brita<\/strong> are its size and lack of versatility. Our lead reviewer said, \u201cThe 20 ounces of water goes fast if you’re big on hydrating like I am, though this bottle is also available in 32 ounces.<\/em>\u201d Since it’s a filter bottle, we hesitated to put any flavoring into it to avoid contaminating the filter. Another noteworthy consideration is that the charcoal filter in this bottle doesn’t remove bacteria, viruses, protozoa, or heavy metals. Instead, it merely reduces chlorine and particulate matter. So, this is a great bottle to use at the gym, work, or any place with municipal (treated) water to remove the chemical taste. <\/p>\n
Doesn’t fit in cup holders<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Like grandma’s Buick, the Nalgene Wide-Mouth is a classic. And just like grandma’s Buick, it’s big and clunky without many bells and whistles. However, the bottle many of us grew up lugging around in the backcountry has been upgraded with some environmental considerations. The new Nalgenes use 50% recycled material and are now BPA-free. You get the same lightweight, wide-mouth container that holds hot and cold liquids without holding onto the flavors (mostly) for the same value, and<\/em> you can walk around enjoying the great outdoors knowing that you’re doing your small part to help reduce, reuse and recycle. Significantly, the new Nalgene bottles are made from a recycled material called Tritan Renew copolyester, which does not have any kind of plastic taste. This is a welcome change from older iterations of this bottle we used in the past. Our most illuminating taste test was with 100\u00b0F water sitting in the bottle for 30 minutes. Unlike many competing bottles, where we could detect a slight plastic taste, the new Nalgene had none. Our reviewer said, \u201cWe expected to taste some plastic here, but the Nalgene surprised us<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

What the Nalgene<\/strong> won’t do is keep your cold liquids cold or your hot liquids hot for very long. There’s absolutely no insulation on these bottles. The container is nearly shatter-proof, but it’s not very thick. Neither does it have a fancy straw, rubber gaskets, or a flip-up spout. It’s a simple (recycled) plastic container with a simple plastic lid: all container and no frills. However, if you need a versatile, lightweight container to lug around liquid on your next backpacking adventure, consider this bottle (or two for the price!) If you want a better option for ultralight backpacking, it’s hard to beat just reusing a 1-liter wide-mouth soda or sports drink bottle for the weight and price \u2014 we know many people who rely on reusing lightweight Smart Water bottles, which can be purchased at nearly any gas station. But on those hot days when your bottle is basking in the sun, consider bringing an insulated model along for the adventure, like the lightweight Iron Flask Insulated<\/strong>. As a bonus, it includes a built-in straw. <\/p>\n
